Can Coffee Cure (Or Cause) Erectile Dysfunction?

By Johnathan P Cumberwell

Have you ever wondered if coffee can have an impact on your performance in bed? Could coffee intake possibly make it more difficult to get and maintain erections? Meaning, could it cause erectile dysfunction?

Or could it on the other hand, improve your sexual performanance and help reduce any incident of erectile dysfunction?

Given that coffee is consumed by more than 80% of adult men worldwide, these are interesting questions.

Let’s look at the facts:

A study concluded in 2008, looked at the association between erectile dysfunction and caffeine in diabetic rats.

Coffee can improve erectile dysfunction

After 8 weeks of treatment, the study found that the rats given caffeine had stronger erectile function, and therefore less ED.

A second research study published in 2015 performed on 3,724 men above the age of 20, also found that coffee may reduce ED. The conclusion from the study was that 2-3 cups a day, did reduce the probability of erectile dysfunction.

This was also found to be the case among overweight/obese and hypertensive men (but not in diabetic men).

A third study done in 2018 also investigated the relationship between coffee intake and erectile dysfunction.

The research study was performed on 21,403 men aged 40-75 years old.

This study showed a somewhat different outcome:

The study reported no statistically differences in ED between those who drank more than 4 cups a day and those who didn’t drink coffee. Or for those who drank modestly.

In other words, drinking coffee did not cause erectile dysfunction among the men in the study.

However, the study did find that drinking decaffeinated coffee had a negative correlation with erectile dysfunction. Those in the study who drank decaffeinated coffee had a 37% increased risk of erectile dysfunction.

Therefore, if you drink decaffeinated coffee and struggle with ED, you may consider changing your coffee habits.

So out of three studies, two say that coffee / caffeine can improve your sexual abilities, and one is neutral.
