In Singapore, the statistics show that men with diabetes on average develop erectile dysfunction 10-15 years earlier than men that do not have diabetes. And 75% of the men with erectile dysfunction will also have or develop diabetes.
Dr. Tan says he has had many patients come to him for ED treatment, who have also said they have otherwise been in perfect health, just for Dr. Tan to diagnose them with diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
Why might ED be a warning sign of health problems such as diabetes?
The reason is that diabetes will often damage blood vessels and cause disturbance to blood flow. Because the blood vessels are very narrow in the penis, blood flow to the penis will often be impacted early on for diabetic patients. Therefore, the first sign of diabetes may be that a man will find it difficult to get erections.
