Erectile Dysfunction Prostate Cancer

We often think of erectile dysfunction as something that is part of getting older. This is partly true, as several studies have shown that more than half of all men above the age of 40 suffers from erectile dysfunction. But having problems getting erections can also be a signal that something more serious is wrong in the body.

Here are six conditions which are often linked to erectile dysfunction:

1. Stroke /heart attack: Erectile dysfunction is often a sign of blocked arteries. The arteries in the penis are very narrow and therefore often get blocked first. The next blockage can be a stroke or a heart attack.

2. Coronary artery disease (CAD): CAD is a condition in which arteries become narrow and stiff due to the build-up of cholesterol. This will reduce blood flow, and this often occurs in the penis first because the arteries there are so narrow. CAD can lead to complications of the heart down the road.

3. Diabetes: Diabetes is a condition that alters the amount of glucose in the blood. This has several direct and indirect effects on blood flow to the penis. Many men who struggle with ED have ED as an early consequence of diabetes.

4. Dementia: There is a strong correlation with people who have dementia and ED, however, the research is still not conclusive on how or why.

5. Prostate Cancer: The prostate is intimately related to the penis and its ability to work properly. ED can be a signal of complications of the prostate. Also, surgery following prostate cancer often causes ED

6. Liver Disease: Liver disease often causes changes to the composition of chemicals in the blood. It may, for instance, reduce testosterone levels. Reduced blood flow, or reduced testosterone levels may lead to erectile dysfunction.
