There have been several studies in the past that have shown that a substantial amount of bicycling can cause erectile dysfunction. Studies also showed that cycling can cause lower sperm levels and numbness to the penis.
However, a recent study performed on more than 2,500 cyclists claim that bicycling does not have a negative impact on the ability to perform sexually.
Also, while controlling for age, the study found that erectile dysfunction was less likely among the higher intensity cyclists.
The study also discovered that cyclists who stood more than 20% of the time while cycling had significantly lower odds of experiencing genital numbness afterwards, compared to cyclists who never stood.
The truth is probably that rubbing the penis against a bicycle seat for long periods of time, is not ideal. However, the exercise benefit from cycling is probably in most cases able to make up for any of this.
