Pollution Can Cause Erectile Dysfunction

Although this is common sense and it has been suspected for a long time that poor air quality can cause erectile dysfunction, at least now it is scientifically proven.

Researchers at Guangzhou University, China, performed a study on the effects of motor vehicle exhaust (VE) on erectile performance in rats.

The study is published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine and you find the study here.

The rats were split into four groups: The first group (the control) were not exposed to VE at all, whereas the other three were exposed to VE for two hours, four hours, and six hours a day, five days a week, respectively.

After three months, the rats were tested for lung function and for erection function.

The study found that those rats that were exposed to VE for four or six hours experienced significant reduction of erectile function. Their intracavernous pressure was reduced by 38.6% and 45.6% respectively, in comparison to the control group.

What can we learn from this study?
