Should you get testosterone therapy? Do you need it? Will it help? And are there any side effects?
Testosterone levels in men have fallen steadily for the last 40 years. In fact, they may have fallen for even longer, but we don’t have reliable records further back.
We are not 100% sure, but we believe it is due to what we eat, the air we breath, the products we surround us with, pollution, lack of exercise and other lifestyle factors.
As testosterone levels have fallen, prescriptions for testosterone replacement therapy have skyrocketed.
Should you also get some extra testosterone?
If your testosterone levels are low, this may be due to you being overweight. Or not being sufficiently physically active. Or because of a poor diet. Or air pollution.
If so, you would probably be better of making lifestyle changes.
Because there is a big problem with adding testosterone to your body:
Your body may then slow or shut down its own testosterone production. If your brain senses that there is enough testosterone in your blood, why should it ask the testes to produce even more?
And even though the average male will lose about 1% of his testosterone production every year after 30, this does not have to be the case.
By living healthy, you can prolong a healthy testosterone production for many years.
